As a CrossFit athlete you'd probably be pretty familiar with the concept of 'squatting to depth'. You're also probably pretty familiar with WHY we ask you to 'squat to depth'. You could probably rattle off the benefits right here and now...you just did it in your head didn't you...Kicking goals on a weekday!!!
Well, we hate to break it to you but whilst the idea of squatting to depth may be a term that you believe is part and parcel of one's fitness regime, there are still many people out there who believe that squatting below parallel is dangerous and will lead to injury.
But in all seriousness, while it is true that for some athletes, a deep squat is not something we encourage, it pays to know the ins and outs of why we make you do...what you do.
Below, we've included a link to an article written by Keegan Smith.
WHO? We hear you ask.
Well. We're glad you're interested!
Keegan is the founder of RealMOVEMENT. He is a performance coach and prior strength and conditioning coach to several professional sporting teams, including the Sydney Roosters. RealMOVEMENT is Keegan's research project that delves into how we can enhance human potential and performance. We haven't just plucked him out of thin air though. One of our coaches, Kristy actually went to a RealMOVEMENT seminar back in 2015 where she found Keegan to be a wealth of knowledge regarding life in general, but someone who provided a fresh 'no bullsh*t' perspective to training.
This article in particular, illustrates Keegan's ability to form an argument around elements of training that are often disputed. He provides the pros and the cons of squatting below parallel as well as some reviews of coaches he has worked with.
However, as with any of the information in our blogs, take the information, digest it a little and assess how it fits into your own ideas of the world.
After all, we aren't here to tell you HOW to think, but we can certainly help MAKE you think.
